ARTICLE 17 - SECONDARY SCHOOLS DEPARTMENT CHAIRPERSONS/SUBJECT AREA LEADERS/GRADE LEVEL LEADERS

17.1  Senior High School 9-12

17.1.1 Departmental Organization

17.1.1.1     Principals of the Senior High Schools and Orangewood High School may provide for appropriate leadership of instructional departments through department chairpersons.

17.1.1.2     The Senior High School principals shall, at their sole discretion, determine the number and composition of instructional departments, provided that the number of such departments shall not exceed fifteen (15) at each high school.

17.1.1.3     The Orangewood High School principal shall, at his/her sole discretion, determine the number and composition of instructional departments.

17.1.1.4     The principal shall recommend, and the Superintendent shall appoint, a department chairperson for each established instructional department.

17.1.1.5     The principal shall consult with members of the instructional department(s) affected prior to making his/her recommendation(s) to the Superintendent.

17.1.1.6     No person shall be appointed or reappointed to the position of department chairperson without his/her acceptance.

17.1.2 Department Chairpersons' Duties and Terms

17.1.2.1     The District shall, at its sole discretion, determine the kinds and levels of services to be provided by the department chairperson, such services to be described in appropriate job descriptions.

17.1.2.2     Department chairpersons shall be appointed for a term of one (1) school year and shall be eligible for annual reappointment on the recommendation of the principal.

17.2 Middle School

17.2.1 Subject Area Leaders

17.2.1.1     The middle school principal shall, at his/her discretion, determine the number and composition of instructional subject areas, provided that number does not exceed seven (7).

17.2.1.2     The principal shall recommend and the Superintendent shall appoint a subject area leader for each established instructional subject area.

17.2.1.3     The principal shall consult with members of the instructional subject areas affected prior to making his/her recommendations to the Superintendent.

17.2.1.4     No person shall be appointed or reappointed to the position of subject area leader without his/her acceptance.

17.2.2 Grade Level Leaders

17.2.2.1     The principal shall recommend and the Superintendent shall appoint two (2) leaders for each grade level.

The principal shall consult with members of the grade levels affected prior to making his/her recommendations to the Superintendent.

No person shall be appointed or reappointed to the position of grade level leader without his/her acceptance.
